Day Three
On day three we woke to a cloudy day but we could feel it getting warmer. It got up to a nice 74 degrees. We spent the day sailing down the Atlantic Ocean towards Road Town, Tortola. As we all learned in school, the Atlantic Ocean is the second largest of the earth’s four oceans but did you know that it’s also the most heavily traveled. The ocean’s name is derived from Atlas, one of the Titans of Greek mythology. The Atlantic Ocean is growing at a rate of several centimeters per year.
Since it was Monday, the New England Patriots/Ravans football game was available on TV in the Queen’s Lounge Stadium 2 and featured popcorn and buckets of domestic beer for only $15, which included a free t-shirt. Of course the Patriots won!
There was a Whatever Floats Your Boat Shipbuilding Contest and all amateur (or professional) engineers, architects, and builders were encouraged to participate in the designing and construction of a ship out of everyday items found on board. There would be ‘sea trials’ in the hot tub and the team with the most seaworthy vessel sailed away with a shipload of prizes. If I hadn’t already been busy during the cruise I might have joined in on this. I bet Alan would’ve done great!
Some of the activities on board for the day were Mass, Interdenominational Service, fitness Aqua Aerobics, Walk-a-Mile, fitness class, Celebrity Coffee Chat with Katzenjammer, Port Shopping Show, Around the World Basketball, Casino Clinic Gaming Tips, Ebay selling, Cribbage and Card Playing, Making Your Own Bloody Mary, Behind the Scenes Kitchen Tour, Scattergories Games, What to See and Do in Barbados, St. Maarten & Puerto Rico Talk, Sap Secrets for Beautiful Hands and Nails, Mixology Class, Team Trivia, Diamond & Exotic Gemstones Talk, volleyball, A Pirate’s Life Talk, Wine Tasting, Tech Support-Front Page, Salsa Lessons, Catch Phrase Game, afternoon tea, craft classes, football toss, yoga, Jewish Evening service, Captain’s Welcome Toast, karaoke, 50s-60s prom night and of course Monday Night Football with New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravans.
We were honored to have a young man, Chris Fisher as our Travel Guide host throughout our cruise. Through writings, presentations, photography, and songs the Noordam’s Travel Guide, Chris Fischer aimed to introduce his audience to the world with insight and energy. From his graduate work in Thailand, to guiding adventures throughout Canada, the US and Asia, his studies and work have taken him around the world in celebration of wild things. Chris was the author of twenty books including wildlife and bird identification guides to many North American regions and cities including New York City. He has also written extensively for radio, TV, documentary films and is the host writer, and singer for the children’s TV series Wildfires. He is a popular speaker and has worked on Holland America Line’s Caribbean, New England, South America and Alaska. Chris gave a wonderful presentation on A Pirate’s Life in the Vista Lounge. I enjoyed learning about so many famous pirates of the sea. I found out that Privateers were actually hired from various countries to protect them from certain pirates. Unfortunately, some of them enjoyed their jobs so much that they became pirates after their commission was over. I would’ve loved to have heard the presentation again.
The first of three formal nights was held and I decided to wear my new floral skirt along with a tan silk blouse. The shoes I had brought to wear during formal night didn’t quite fit as my feet were swollen but I was still able to wear them by making some adjustments to the straps. Alan looked quite dashing in his tuxedo. Stuart came dressed in his Scottish kilt garb and impressed everyone at our table as well as everyone who passed by. Nancy also wore a red dress and Stuart joked how we must have compared notes when getting dressed. For dinner I ordered the roasted chicken with vegetable, potatoes and of course the chilled fruit soup and Caesar salad. I decided that I didn’t want any dessert but had my cappuccino. At craft classes I made a beautiful pearl nugget bracelet to match the earrings I had made the previous day and a pair of blue cobalt earrings. I enjoyed not only doing the crafts but the socializing with other passenger as well.
